Safeguarding Policy and Procedures
Sport and physical activity can and does have a very powerful and positive influence on people - especially young people. Not only can it provide opportunities for enjoyment and achievement, it can also develop valuable qualities such as self-esteem, leadership and teamwork. These positive effects can only take place if delivery is planned, structured and of a high quality that ensures the welfare of all participants and raises standard across activities.
The reality is that abuse does take place and in some cases coaches and other trusted adults in sport have been convicted. Every adult has a legal and moral responsibility to protect the young people and disabled adults in sport from abuse.
SportActiv is committed to working in partnership with all agencies to ensure that information and training opportunities are available for coaches to guide them in best practice when working with all. Adopting best practice will help to safeguard from potential abuse as well as reducing the likelihood of allegations being made against coaches and other adults in positions of authority.
This document is available, as a minimum operating standard for partners to develop further and tailor policies as appropriate. It details procedures for administrators, coaches, instructors, officials, teachers, parents and young people. We all have a duty of care towards young and vulnerable performers and can help to protect them from abuse.
